San Antonio Fiesta 2013

Fiesta 2013 was memorable for the wonderfully cool weather and rain. I didn’t make it to as many events as I had planned but I was still worn out by Sunday. Following are pictures from some of the events. For pictures of Fiesta Hats please visit my post here. Thanks to Peter Ray for taking pictures.

Cirque de la Symphonie

Model posing in the lobby before the show

Cirque de la Symphonie delighted the full house last Saturday at the Majestic Theatre. The people around me continually gasped in amazement at the feats of strength and agility displayed by the seven Cirque performers.

The San Antonio Symphony performed classical and pop numbers that synced perfectly with the acrobatic performances.  Selections included “Harry’s Wondrous  World” from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone which was paired with Shana Lord performing acrobatics on a long scarf that was connected to the top of the stage.

The comedian in the Cirque group, Vladimir Tsarkov (Red Harlequin),  performed several times — juggling, miming and performing a magic trick on Conducter Ken-David Masur.  Conductor Masur was also very funny and worked well with the Cirque performers.

A highlight of the show was Alexander Streltsov, an aerialist, flying over the symphony’s heads as they played Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries.”  The show closed with two Polish strongmen, Jarek and Darek, performing to Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D minor.”  The two men are former Polish national hand-balancing champions and their performance was an amazing show of strength and agility.

Before the show and during intermission models dressed in interesting outfits posed in the lobbies.

An Evening With The Three Phantoms

Symphony 026The “three phantoms” concert last night at the Majestic Theatre was very entertaining and enjoyable.  The premise was that three singers who had starred in “The Phantom of the Opera” performed songs from a variety of Broadway shows.  The three singers – Kevin Gray, Mark Jacoby, Craig Schulman – performed a variety of serious and comical songs from shows including “Guys and Dolls,” “Paint Your Wagon,” and “Secret Garden.”  The San Antonio Symphony accompanied the singers and played two solo selections – a medley from “Jesus Christ Superstar” and selections from Les Miserables.

The most enjoyable part of the show was when each singer performed a song that was meaningful to his career and told a story about the song.  All three singers were very humorous and comfortable interacting with the audience.  The show closed with several selections from “The Phantom of the Opera.”  The audience responded by giving the performers several standing ovations.

We were short on time before the show so got a quick meal at the Delivery Market at 310 E. Houston Street near the theater.  The Market serves sandwiches, pizza, salads and soup.  They also sell beer, wine and a variety of groceries and toiletry items.  The Market delivers orders on cute scooters that were parked outside.  My husband liked the store so much he started talking about moving to one of the apartments nearby.  The sandwiches tasted very good and a sandwich, side and drink only set us back about $15 for two people.
