The Landmark Coffee Shop’s historic two-story building was restored by Charles Williams in 2009. The building now serves as a restaurant, barbershop and community meeting space. The restaurant is located at 701 Montana on the corner of South Pine two blocks south of East Commerce Street.
I stopped by for lunch with a friend on Saturday afternoon after shopping. It was warm and sunny so we sat on the peaceful upstairs balcony overlooking two large pecan trees. The menu includes breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, baby back ribs and brisket. We both ordered brisket sandwiches and potato salad with refreshing ice tea. Our waiter was very friendly and efficient.
The business owner, Charles Williams, came out and chatted with us for a long time about all manner of things including dogs and his dreams for Montana Street. Mr. Williams has purchased another house a few doors down where he plans to offer support services to small businesses and open an event planning service. The location is very accessible from downtown and Mr. Williams said that many downtown workers frequent his restaurant for weekday lunch.
The food at Landmark tastes homemade and is reasonably priced. The bill for my sandwich, potato salad, iced tea and a slice of butter pecan cake was under $10. The brisket was tender and tasty. I had to cut off a few pieces of fat but that seemed a fair tradeoff for juicy meat. The cake was delicious, tasting of pralines and maple. I look forward to returning to sample the breakfast items, especially the biscuits and pancakes.
The restaurant is currently open from 7:30 am to 3 pm Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on Friday and Saturday.
