I stopped by the San Antonio Museum of Art on Sunday afternoon for lunch and a look at the exhibit of psychedelic art. The restaurant, Cafe des Artistes, is in the back of the museum overlooking the river. We sat on the outside terrace which was cooled by numerous ceiling fans. This segment of the river is nicely landscaped and peaceful. Several river barges passed by. The restaurant offered a wide variety of panini sandwiches, salads, quiche and additional hot entrees. I enjoyed the delicious chicken crepes while my friends ordered panini sandwiches. Service was prompt and friendly.
After a relaxing leisurely lunch we toured the psychedelic art exhibit. The colorful exhibit included a variety of styles and media. I resisted the artist explanations via cell phone at first but tried it after my friends highly recommended it. The artists’ explanations of the pieces were entertaining and added a lot to the exhibit.
The psychedelic art exhibit runs through Sunday, August 1st. Cafe des Artistes is open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To coincide with the museum’s extended hours “Free Tuesday” program, the café is open until 9 p.m. on Tuesday nights. I look forward to returning to the cafe for a pastry on the terrace.

Urban Spotlight San Antonio 
We recently finally made our way over to the Cafe as well. Had an incrediby good wild mushroom pasta dish. With no wood-burning stove around in the tiny kitchen, pizzas are average. But sitting perched up on the patio overlooking the river with a good bottle of wine more than makes up for any shortcomings. We eyed the desserts on the way out, and they looked great.
Had not expected to enjoy the psychedelic exhibit. Thought it would be tired ’60s stuff, but instead found an interesting mixture including some contemporary San Antonio artists. Definitely worth seeing.
