The first Diwali San Antonio: Festival of Lights was on Sunday evening in the Arneson River Theater in La Villita on the Riverwalk. I got there on time but that was much too late to find a seat or even a standing place in the crowded theater.
The program included several groups of Indian dancers performing on the stage to traditional and modern music. Mayor Castro and former Mayor Hardberger spoke about San Antonio’s sister city in India – Chennai. Red and white lighted Diya candles were then released on the River. The lights bobbed for quite a while in front of the stage trying to decide which way to float.
The festivities continued in Maverick Plaza with food and music. The event concluded with fireworks. The festival was sponsored by the India Association of San Antonio and the City of San Antonio.
