The Hispanic Heritage Center gala on Saturday night was fun and informative. The gala was held at the lovely Westin La Cantera. The program included an inspiring talk by actor Jesse Borrego, information about the proposed Hispanic Heritage Center, and a fashion show featuring clothing designs from Spain and Mexico.
I hadn’t heard of the Hispanic Heritage Center before attending the gala. The proposed Center will include museum space, an auditorium, meeting space, a research library, archival storage, classrooms and multimedia facilities. The development will tell the story of Texas and Tejanos, descendants of the Spanish and Mexican families that first inhabited the Texas frontier from the late 1600s through the late 1800s. The Center will also include a Tejano Living Heritage Village.
The Heritage Center’s organizers, led by Rudi R. Rodriguez, want to construct the $50 million facility at Hemisfair Park. They have identified an interim location for the Center in the Gulf Insurance Group Building in Hemisfair Park.
